BEIL0014 The Blister

This assignment requires us to make a tear drop shape using two given wooden template to clamp the aluminium sheet in the middle by putting four screws in the corners of the metal sheet, preventing it from moving and make sure, it doesn't expand and drawn into the wrong direction. First of all, i am using the wooden stick to hammer the edge of the shape which can gives a more uniform edge shape and easier to create a better appearance edges. After a few adjustment around the edges, i started hammering the middle of the metal which can draws down the metal. Due to the metal sheet is clamped by the wooden template, it can only go downward which can develop the depth of the metal. After i finished hammering it and unclamp it, i found it is not as deep as i thought, after comparing with some of the fellow students, i decided to start over again doing another one. And it turns out to be much better result. I found this project the most satisfying among all the previous ...

BEIL0014 torus making

Image
Introduction: This is the second project of making a torus by using reverse curve skills in metal shaping. Progress: Starting with a rectangle aluminium sheet and use ruler to measure the centre line and lines which are parallel to the centre line which can be a good indicator for me to do the next step of hammering the centre of the metal using this block of reverse curve wood. Then bending the metal is needed in order to create the reverse curve.  After hammering the middle, the metal stretches downward to create a curve in one direction After using the small english wheel, the metal is smoothen, but the curve wasn't deep enough, the english wheel flattened the torus, therefore more hammer work is needed in this stage to correct it from flattening.  The cured tool is designed for creating the curves in both sides.

BEIL0014 Aluminium bowl making

BEIL 0014 Digital Making The first project is to create a aluminium bowl by hammering and cutting. At first we were given a aluminium sheet and cut it into a circle by using series of concentric rings to draw a perfect circles on the aluminium sheet. The larger ring helps shapes the metal sheet into a circle, smaller ring helps creating a guides for hammering. A female radius gauge helps evaluate and monitor the progress of making the metal bowl by using the concave curve on the gauge. It provides 3 different curves to choose from, in this case, i chose r125 in the beginning of the bowl, but when the hammering process proceed, shrinking and stretching occurs, it is very difficult to control the curve of the bowl, especially using the sand bag as the base of the hammering process. I end up with r155 by using the english wheel. The english wheel is the final step to take the bowl into a relatively round shape, it works as a linear hammer and by choosing the correct wheel, thi...
